Joan Rivers hospitalized after heart attack during operation

Joan Rivers was rushed by ambulance to the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York after a report that her heart stopped beating The comedienne was having a procedure done on her vocal chords when things went wrong and Rivers reportedly stopped breathing. According to TMZ earlier on Thursday, Joan Rivers is in critical condition.

The seriousness of Joan Rivers health condition is unknown. It's said that no major decisions are being made about her treatment until daughter Melissa Rivers arrives in New York.

Rivers told audiences on a recent episode of "Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?" that there was a spot found on her vocal chords. She joked with the audience and told them not to be sad about it. The procedure was supposed to be pretty uneventful and she would have been released after it was over. Unfortunately something got complicated when the famed comedienne stopped breathing on the operating table.

Rivers, 81, was seen Wednesday night performing at the Laurie Beechman Theater in New York City. She was said to look healthy and in really good shape.

This isn't Joan Rivers' first major health scare. In 2002 she was diagnosed with osteoporosis after a fall down the stairs left her with multiple broken bones. Since the diagnosis, she has become a great advocate for women's bone health and for timely screenings for women.

The severity of Joan Rivers' current medical condition is still unknown. After Melissa is able to reach her mother, fans can expect updates on her current health crisis.
