A major part of the Los Angeles landscape is its celebrity population and industry that brings business, tourists and crowds to spots like the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It is also fodder for journalists reporting on the scene, especially after a celebrity passes away. The most recent and notable deaths were James Garner and Robin Williams, and today the snarky, quick-witted, mistress of the barbs, Joan River lost of her battle with life after going into a coma a week ago following a minor operation.
Today at 1:30 p.m. crowds swarmed to watch as official flowers were placed on Joan Rivers star that sits at 7000 Hollywood Boulevard and was put there on July 26, 1989. A steady stream of fans and tourists followed placing items on what is now a memorial. Most likely candles will burn there tonight.
In a statement to the press, Rivers’ daughter Melissa, who had been at her side throughout her hospitalization at Mount Sinai in New York, said, “It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers,” Melissa Rivers said in a written statement today. “She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.” The news media, CNN, LA Times on Line, and all online Hollywood publications quickly picked up the story and spread the news people were dreading to hear.
