That is impressive for anyone in Hollywood especially for a woman in Hollywood let alone a female comedian.

Joan’s hard hitting and quick witted humor was unheard of when she began her stand up career. Her comedic style is mimicked all the time and to be honest it is what has paved the way for comedians such as Wanda Sykes, Sarah Silverman, Sandra Bernhard, Margaret Cho and of course Kathy Griffin.

Rivers was a genius at timing her comedic insults in interviews with celebrities. In 1994, Joan and her daughter Melissa began hosting the pre-award red carpet shows on E! for the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.

Rivers set the pace for the red carpet obsession, to watch and comment on celebrities and their fashion sense or lack thereof became the blue print that all other entertainment shows to follow.

It was her backhanded compliments, outright insults and artistic timing that made watching celebrities on the red carpet funny as hell.

In those moments, what E! didn’t realize was that they were giving their audience two hours of Joan Rivers’ best comedic performances live and uncut. E! had hit the jackpot.

Joan Rivers not only extended her fan base to include multiple generations she also helped cultivate celebrity style. No one wanted to be talked about by Joan Rivers and if they were they should have considered themselves grateful. Joan saved her best insults for the celebrities that everyone paid attention to. That is what made it so freaking hilarious.

Her tongue slashing of celebrity fashion and their public shenanigans sparked a phenomenon with viewers because they were sitting at home, eating potato chips on their couch thinking the exact same thing, but Joan had the balls to say it on live TV. She made a living saying exactly what people were thinking.

She was the hardest working woman in Hollywood, at 81 she was still working her craft. Hosting E! Fashion Police, a reality show with her daughter Melissa ‘Joan Knows Best’ on WE TV, she wrote her twelfth book in 2012 titled ‘I hate everyone…starting with me’ and in 2013 she starred in her own YouTube show called “In Bed with Joan” in which she interviewed celebrity guests that came out of the closet. That’s Joan for you, never afraid to go there.

She was an amazing talent, a comedic innovator, a loving mother, and a force to be reckoned with.

RIP Joan. We will miss you greatly.
