The members of former "X Factor" U.K. finalist group JLS got into the craze of standing in line for an iPhone 5 the day it went on sale (on September 21, 2012), in order to get some publicity from the group. All four members of JLS (Oritsé Williams, Marvin Humes, Aston Merrygold and JB Gill) joined thousands of people around the world who did the same thing: queuing up in long lines in front of a store that sells the iPhone5, just so they could buy it on the first day that the popular Apple gadget went on sale. JLS chose the Carphone Warehouse on Oxford Street in London as the store to wait in line for the iPhone 5.
Some people waiting in these lines admitted to media outlets that they were paid to be there by sponsors that wanted publicity, since the consumer demand for the iPhone 5 has been getting so much coverage in the press.
JLS has another agenda for the publicity of standing in an iPhone 5 buyers' line: JLS has new music to promote, namely, "Hottest Girl in the World," the first single from JLS's fourth album, "Evolution." As previously reported, "Hottest Girl in the World" has a U.K. release on October 21, 2012, while "Evolution" is due out in the U.K. on November 5, 2012.
While many record companies are phasing out singles available on CD, JLS announced on Twitter that the group's record company (Sony Music's Epic Records in the U.K.) is making 3,000 CDs available of "Hottest Girl in the World."
JLS came in second place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2008. The group has had several No. 1 hits in the U.K. and has won two Brit Awards.
JLS tweeted multiple photos of the iPhone 5 and of themselves waiting at the Carphone Warehouse.
Humes tweeted: "Just got my #iphone5 from @carphonewarehouse ready to get fully involved!!!!! Yeh boi!!!! Marv."
