JIMMY LOPEZ & 'BEL CANTO': Anatomy of an Opera and Its Composer (Part III)

At the end of December 2013, Peruvian composer Jimmy López talked about the creative process for the development of the opera 'Bel Canto' for this multi-part article series. Commissioned by American opera star, Renée Fleming, as Creative Consultant for Lyric Opera of Chicago, 'Bel Canto' is slotted to be premiered in 2015. Jimmy López discussed the tight schedule 'Bel Canto' is following, with due dates for material being written and composed as well as review meetings with the 'Bel Canto' creative team.

Jimmy López discusses the steps that followed the initial selection of members of the 'Bel Canto' creative team. The libretto is being written by Pulitzer Prize winner, dramaturge Nilo Cruz. Upon receiving an initial draft, Jimmy López starts drafting the first music for the opera as Nilo Cruz continues with his work the first draft. The opera is to be written mostly in English and Spanish, but will also include Japanese, Russian, French, German, and Quechua, a unique challenge Jimmy López is certainly up to.

The Peruvian composer also addresses the change in direction to Kevin Newbury who has extensive experience working with new opera works as well as Broadway productions.
