On Tuesday, September 10 the New York Daily News posted a story about how a popular viral video about twerking was really a prank masterminded by talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. The video features a young girl tweaking before she hits a bunch of lit candles on a table and her pants are set on fire. Twerking is a new dance move that recently came under controversy after Miley Cyrus twerked onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards in Brooklyn.
The video was released on YouTube and has been seen by over nine million people. The video has not promoted by the show or on other social media networks, but went viral after it was uploaded to the internet. Kimmel announced the video was a prank and released an extended version of the video where he enters the room and takes the fire out with a fire extinguisher.
The video was called "Worst Twerk Fail EVER" and the girl featured in the video is stuntwoman Daphne Avalon, although the video says her name is Caitlin Heller. Many people said the video was a hoax after Heller declined interviews, and the video was filmed over two months ago. Kimmel filmed the video is the hopes that twerking would go away forever after people saw how dangerous it can be. However, the performance by Miley Cyrus has created even more controversy and press for the dance.
