Jimmie Johnson is getting back to his roots and will compete in a NASCAR Nationwide Series race on March 2 at Phoenix International Raceway, per a recent report. The five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champ will drive for JR Motorsports in the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200.
JR Motorsports is owned by his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. Johnson drives the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports in NSCS.
“My goal is to make my team owner so proud that, perhaps, he’ll invite me back more often than once every two years," Johnson said. “In all seriousness, this is a great opportunity for me to get more familiar with the new configuration at PIR. Not only do we race there twice in Cup, but both races are in crucial spots on the schedule for Team Lowe’s Racing."
Johnson raced in the NNS series full time in 2001 and 2002. He has run 92 NNS races in his career and has one win, 2001 at the Chicagoland Speedway, and 24 top ten finishes. His last NNS race was the 2011 Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen and he finished 2nd.
