You always miss one or two. Yesterday I wrote an article on upcoming Doors or Doors related events and I thought I had them all, but with what would have been Jim Morrison’s 70th birthday approaching (December 8th) events do seem to be manifesting themselves. November 2 will be the Flying Morrison Mural Launch/Wake Up Photo exhibit in Long Beach, California.
Jim Coke was a student photographer on July 15, 1967 when he attended the Fantasy Faire and Magic Music Festival, with only a limited amount of camera’s and film he took pictures of The Doors performance focusing on Morrison because as Coke said “Not only was he remarkably photogenic, but he was aware of cameras and seemed to move with photographers in mind.” Coke would go on to photograph other 60’s countercultural events such as the Griffith Park Human Be-In, Allen Ginsberg reading at USC, Ravi Shankar playing at the Monterey Pop Festival, and San Francisco area anti-war and Black Panther demonstrations before moving on to other career pursuits.
In the early 90’s Coke rediscovered his Doors photographs and that they were in good shape and the negatives had never been printed, and he went about bringing those photographs to the public’s attention. Part of that effort is Flying Morrison Mural Launch/Wake Up Photo Exhibit, which will start with the unveiling of one of those pictures as a mural. The picture is one of the series taken at the Fantasy Faire and Magic Music Festival. Then the action will move across the street to Fingerprints Music which will host an exhibition of Coke’s photographs. Special guests/musical performers include Chris Boyle, who worked as a publicist for The Doors post Miami, John Bazz will perform a spoken word poetry, Marc Ford formerly of the Black Crowes and now the Neptune Blues Club, Kern Richards, and others will perform.
There will also be a reception for Coke’s photography exhibit on November 7th it will feature poet Michael C. Ford, the bands Slushbox, Natural Hi-Fi, and Move. The Flying Morrison Mural Launch/Wake Up Photo exhibit will be held at Park (D) Plaza, 425 E. 4th Street, Long Beach, CA, 90802.
