Jim Morrison biographer James Riordan, author of Break On Through: The Life and Death of Jim Morrison (along with co-author Jerry Prochnicky) will be the subject of a roast for charity tomorrow night, September 13, 2013 at the Majestic Theater in Kankakee, Illinois.
Riordan’s and Prochnicky’s biography of Jim Morrison, although over 20 years old is still considered the definitive biography of Jim Morrison. Oliver Stone also reportedly used the biography as a source for his 1991 film The Doors. Riordan also wrote a biography of Stone, Stone: The Controversies, Excesses and Exploits of a Radical Filmmaker. Stone is also expected to make an appearance at the roast Friday night, although it may only be via film or video clip.
The roast will raise money for Mindfulness on the Inside, an organization that works to reduce recidivism among inmates at the Jerome Combs Detention Center in Kankakee. Riordan will be signing copies of his new novel Kill Switch from 6pm until 7:45pm, the doors to the auditorium will open at 7pm and the roast will start at 8pm. Other celebrities included in the program are Creed Bratton formerly of the TV show The Office (also a former member of the rock group The Grass Roots), also via a filmed clip, those roasting Riordan include Jaymie Simmon, Tim Milner, Gary Moore, Palmer Tolly, Gary Reynolds, Jake Collins and Bob Hilbrich. Tickets to the event are only $10 and can be bought at the Majestic Theater, 150 Schuyler Avenue, Kankakee, IL, 60901 box office or at King Music.
In other Chicago area Doors related news, the Haymarket Pub and Brewery is featuring the Drinking and Writing Festival 2013: Jim Morrison. The program includes a presentation on Morrison and his writings by Northwestern professor Bill Savage, The Secret History of Chicago Music by Steve Krakow, and to cap off the festivities the “2 drink minimum writing contest!” in which contestants are given a theme related to Jim Morrison or The Doors and five minutes in which to create something related to their theme. Attendees are also encouraged to wear their best late 60’s/early 70’s attire. The Drinking and Writing Festival 2013: Jim Morrison will be October 5, 2013 from 12pm (noon) until 6pm. Tickets are $30 and are available at Brown Paper Tickets.
