Jim Brown slavery Facebook apology issued after offensive comment goes viral

It’s the Jim Brown slavery comment that has truly gone viral online, causing many on Friday to question how someone so public could make such an egregious error in judgment. And because of that, Brown is now issuing an apology on the same platform where he offended so many people.

Jim Brown, a Republican that’s running in Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District, made an attempt to link over entitlements to slavery, and in doing so, wrote that slave owners “took pretty good care of their slaves and livestock.”

That comment, and the whole post itself, caused many to rush to both his Facebook page and the media shouting their outrage. In less than 24 hours, Brown went into damage control, issuing an apology for his comment.

In doing so, however, Brown also made sure to say that he firmly believes his words were taken out of context.

“I made a post yesterday implying that the entitlement state being created in our country is similar to to the method slave owners used to keep their slaves under control. (Taking care of their basic needs while denying them real education and opportunity) Some people read this to mean that I didn't think slavery was that bad. I believe that slavery is worse than death - yesterday, today and tomorrow. I apologize to anyone I offended. If I had it to do over I would have been more careful with my wording, but you don't get do overs in politics. So, I'll have to pay the price for this. My platform is "responsibility" and I accept the responsibility.”

Brown then went on to say that he cares about every human being on the planet, and that he entered the race because “I think our leaders have let us down on both sides of the aisle. I know they have. I've made plenty of mistakes in my life. But I have and will apologize when I make them and learn from them as I move forward. Again, apologies to all I offended.”

His apology didn’t sit well with everyone, as one Facebook commenter immediately responded to Brown by saying “you have shown your true colors.”

Jim Brown’s “Jim Brown to Congress” Facebook page now only has 73 “likes.”

While the comments are no doubt offensive and insensitive, it comes at a particularly bad time for Brown, with movies like "12 Years a Slave" firmly implanted in the public's consciousness following the 2014 Academy Awards.

What do you think about what Jim Brown said about slavery? Do you feel his Facebook apology was enough? Or do you feel this story is overblown? Voice your comments below and make your voice heard in our discussion.
