One of the all-time greatest Magic: The Gathering players will be in Philadelphia this weekend competing at Pro Tour Philadelphia – a three-day invitation only event. Jon Finkel, a Magic Hall of Famer and former Player of Year, has an unprecedented (and still unmatched) career with 11 Magic Pro Tour Top 8 finishes.
Finkel's championship status was recently in the news for a different reason. He was the subject of a scathing post on Gizmodo and Jezebel about a date with intern Alyssa Bereznak gone horribly awry. Bereznak blasted Finkel for being a Magic: The Gathering pro and then backpeddled as the geek community roared its disapproval by surreptitiously editing her post.
Finkel announced via Twitter that he plans to donate his winnings from this weekend’s tournament in Philadelphia to the newly-formed Gamers Helping Gamers, a charity that provides college scholarship and mentoring programs to members of the Magic: The Gathering community. Finkel is one of the founders of Gamers Helping Gamers, and sits on the Board.
Just another example of how Bereznak's shallow first impression of Finkel was undeserved.
