Each week during the high school sports season the Eastern Maine High School Sports Examiner and the Eastern Maine Sports Blog will announce a female and male athlete of the week. 2012/2013 Winter season- Week 5- December 31st-January 5th
Female
Jillian Woodward- Orono- Basketball- Recorded 16 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks in three quarters of action in 53-19 victory over Bucksport. Recorded 15 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks in 49-25 victory over John Bapst. Scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in 89-88 four overtime victory over Schenck. Woodward has six double-doubles in leading the Red Riots to a 7-1 start to the season.
Woodward is the fifth student-athlete from Orono high school to earn athlete of the week honors. She joins Christian Mowrer, Andi Foster, Tyler Eddy and Dominic Mowrer. Foster, Eddy and Dominic Mowrer each earned the honor twice. Click here for the full list of past winners.
Runner up
Parise Rossignol- Van Buren- Basketball- Scored 49 points in 66-48 victory over Fort Kent. Scored 10 points in 57-31 loss to Hodgdon.
Other nominations
Grace MacLean- Bangor- Track and Field- MacLean won the 55 hurdles in 8.8 seconds and took the long jump in 16-2 1/4 in a meet against Hampden Academy, Hermon and Old Town. She also set a league record when she went over the high-jump bar at 5 feet, 6 inches.
Cassandra Buck- Easton- Basketball- Scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds in 50-20 victory over Wisdom. Scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in 49-27 victory over Ashland.
Delani Bennett- PCHS- Basketball- Recorded eight points, 20 rebounds, five assists and five blocks in 62-33 victory over Stearns. Scored four points and pulled down 12 rebounds in 47-27 victory over George Stevens.
Cory Fellows- PCHS- Basketball- Recorded 13 points and 14 rebounds in 62-33 victory over Stearns. Scored four points and pulled down 18 rebounds in 47-27 victory over George Stevens.
Jesse Bell- PCHS- Basketball- Recorded 21 points (four 3 pointers), seven rebounds, two steals and one assist in 62-33 victory over Stearns. Had 18 points and four assists in 47-27 victory over George Stevens.
Alex Speed- PCHS-Basketball- Recorded 14 points, five assists, four steals, two rebounds and one block in 62-33 victory over Stearns. Recorded 12 points, five assists and four steals in 47-27 victory over George Stevens.
Taylor Pelkey- Stearns- Basketball- Recorded 16 points and 13 rebounds in 62-33 loss to PCHS.
