Jill Duggar says 'Yes!' to Derick Dillard on '19 Kids & Counting'

Derick Dillard took it right down to the wire as Jill and Jim Bob Duggar were leaving Nepal, but he finally asked Jill to start an official courtship—and, of course, she said, “Yes!”

The Duggar girls are getting older, and roles are shifting in the home. Jinger taught Joy Anna to make the family’s bread recipe this week—can you just imagine how much bread they would have to buy if they did not make it themselves? They all just appear to be settling into the changing roles of the evolving Duggar family. And, it is a testament, it seems, to the way Jim Bob and Michelle have raised their children, that the older kids are such good teachers for the younger ones, and that they want to share their knowledge with them to keep the family running.

It will be two and a half months before Derick returns to Arkansas from Nepal—forever in the terms of young love, of course—and then he will only be about a 40 minute drive from the object of his affection. It has to be an intimidating experience, meeting all of the Duggars and knowing that, sooner or later, they are going to ask you to name all of them in order of oldest to youngest—or trip you up and ask you to go from youngest to oldest, maybe. And, getting into a dating relationship with ANY Duggar is going to mean TV time—something that established relationships have trouble surviving, much less a newly formed alliance. But, then again, maybe if a relationship is established with publicity like the Duggars command from the start, it grows within those parameters and has a better chance of weathering the publicity storms. Who knows?

Well, Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard are going to know before too long!

There has been a lot of controversy over the Duggars’ “courting” beliefs. In this day and age, it is hard to imagine that there could still be people in the world who want to take things slow and carefully, when everything and everybody around them is in “go, go, go” mode, whether it be for work, play or relationship building. But, then again, with half of all marriages ending in divorce nowadays, the “go, go, go” philosophy for relationships just doesn’t seem to have a lot of merit when you really think about it.

“Courting” isn’t “engagement,” but it certainly is intended to head in that direction, just at a slower, minimally physical pace than most relationships in 2014. So, here’s to Jill and Derick; congratulations on your courtship, and good luck on your future endeavors—not that we know anything about that yet, of course.

19 KIDS & COUNTING airs on TLC on Tuesday nights at 9/8c.
