It's time for the 12th Annual Jif® Most Creative Sandwich Contest; now through November 8th, kids from across the country will have the chance to discover new lunchbox favorites and achieve sandwich stardom, with the chance of earning a $25,000 college fund!
Last year, 10-year-old Jacob C. from Morganton, NC took home the grand prize for his creative recipe: the Magnificent Mole Chicken Torta. Jacob’s unique use of Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread in a savory mole sauce earned him a $25,000 college fund.
Here is his prizewinning entry:
Magnificent Mole Chicken Torta
- 3/4 cup pulled rotisserie chicken, heated
- 1 slice Monterey Jack cheese, halved
- 1 bolillo roll, sliced lengthwise
- 3 avocado slices
- 1/2 cup thinly sliced lettuce
- 1/8 cup chopped tomato
- Dollop of sour cream (optional)
- Cooking spray
- 2 tablespoons minced onion
- 1/4 teaspoon minced garlic
- 2 tablespoons Jif® Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread
- 1/3 cup condensed tomato soup
- Juice of half a lime (about 2 Tbsp.)
- 1/4 cup chopped green chili peppers
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon dried cilantro
Generously spray a small sauce pot with cooking spray, and sauté minced onion and garlic over medium-high heat until tender. Stir in 2 tablespoons of Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread, tomato soup, lime juice, cumin, cilantro and green chili peppers. Bring to a boil and simmer on low heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove sauce from heat. Toss half the sauce with pulled chicken, and place mixture on the bottom half of the roll. Top with cheese slices and place sandwich open-faced under a toaster oven or broiler for 2-3 minutes until cheese melts. Remove sandwich from oven, and place sliced avocado on top of melted cheese.
Then, add lettuce, tomatoes, a dollop of sour cream (optional), and the top half of roll. Use remaining sauce as extra sauce for the sandwich if desired, or to make another sandwich.
This year, entrants can incorporate new flavors into their sandwiches by using Jif Peanut Butter, new Jif Almond and Cashew Butters and Jif Whipped Peanut Butter Spreads or Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spreads.
From August 20, 2013 through November 8, 2013, parents can submit their child’s innovative recipe online at Jif.com by completing the contest entry form.
Sandwiches will be judged on the following criteria: creativity, taste, visual appeal and ease of preparation.
Each original sandwich recipe submitted must contain at least two tablespoons of Jif Peanut Butter, Jif Hazelnut Spread, Jif Almond and Cashew Butters or Jif Whipped Peanut Butter Spreads.
Entries must be submitted online by 11:59 a.m. on November 8, 2013.
Ten semifinalists will be chosen in November 2013 and will participate in a nationwide online vote beginning January 2014. Five finalists will then be determined to attend an event in New York City, where the contest grand prize winner will be announced.
