RFK Jr. arrested is one of the stories making headlines Thursday.
The Christian Science Monitor headline read, “RFK Jr. arrested: Celebs, enviros arrested at Keystone pipeline protest
“Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune also was arrested — the first time in the group's 120-year history that a club leader was arrested in an act of civil disobedience.”
The case is also making headlines in the UK but not because RFK Jr. was arrested, it was because of the arrest of his son, Conor. That story is here.
Those arrested included environmental activist lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr., his son (and Taylor Swift ex-boyfriend) Connor, and longtime civil rights leader Julian Bond and actress Daryl Hannah.
Those arrested had tied themselves to the White House gate as part of a protest against the Keystone XL a proposed oil pipeline which would extend from western Canada to Texas.
Arrested and released on bail
The arrested activists including RFK Jr. were charged with failure to disperse and obey lawful orders. The bail amount was just $100 each.
The protesters were urging President Barack Obama to oppose the pipeline which they say would present a risk to the environment, including the possibility of a leak.
The pipeline would be 1,700 miles long. Oil industry leaders have touted it as a way to avoid dependence on Middle East oil as well as it being a big job creator.
What do you think of the oil pipeline proposal? Do you agree with the activists or do you think it is necessary for North America's oil Independence? Leave you comments below.
