JFK bomber jacket sells for $665,500

President John F. Kennedy’s bomber jacket has just sold for $665,500 at auction. That selling price is based on a bidding price of $570,000, plus a buyer’s premium of over $95,000.

The dark brown bomber jacket was reportedly worn by Kennedy on Air Force One during his presidency prior to his assassination in Dallas, Texas in 1963, per John McInnis Auctioneers in Amesbury, Massachusetts. The JFK jacket was only expected to fetch a far more modest amount of $20,000 to $40,000.

The jacket sold on Sunday February 17, 2013 along with some 2,000 photographs, documents, gifts and mementos of president Kennedy that belonged to his aide David F. Powers.

David Powers had known John Kennedy since his first political campaign for Congress in 1946 and continued to stay with him until JFK’s death in 1963.

Powers may have collected these JFK mementos and memorabilia over the years but his family only learnt of them after his death back in 1998. Some of these items will be kept in the Powers family, while others may be donated to the Kennedy Library in Boston.

Some of the more chilling items include Powers’ copy of president Kennedy’s Dallas itinerary on the day he was shot on November 22, 1963 during a motorcade with wife Jackie Kennedy by his side, handwritten details from Powers of JFK’s last hours prior to his death and how he helped to carry the president on a stretcher to the operating room, his time of death and a recount of what followed after his death. A lot of history here…
