The Executive Director of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NDJC) came out yesterday with some harsh criticisms of 2013 CPAC Straw Poll winner, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) specifically, and the Conservative Political Action Conference’s (CPAC) in general, according to a statement from Aaron Keyak March 16.
In his statement, Keyak said, “Regardless of political affiliation, American Jews should be alarmed that the Republican Party’s core activists have selected Senator Rand Paul to be their preferred standard bearer for 2016. Senator Paul has called multiple times to cut and end American aid to Israel, and has refused to rule out a containment strategy vis-à-vis Iran. Paul’s misguided foreign policy views are nothing short of dangerous, and his growing legitimacy among the GOP’s base is only another reason why the vast majority of Jewish Americans consistently support the Democratic Party.”
Dr. Paul was definitely the main target of Mr. Keyak's criticisms, but not the only one.
He says of CPAC, "Judging by the speaker lineup, it’s clear that the future direction of the American conservative movement does not have much room for the Jewish community’s political values."
He criticizes Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) for not making a clear expression of support for Israel and stopping Iran’s nuclear weapons program during his State of the Union rebuttal.
A jab at Texas Governor Rick Perry was also noted because of Perry's pledge to start Israel's foreign aid at zero and Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI), who continues to author regressive and unrealistic budgets.
According to the NDJC website, their mission is to maximize Jewish support for Democrats at the federal and state levels of government, educate Democratic elected officials and candidates to increase support for Jewish domestic and foreign policy priorities and promote both social justice in America and a secure, democratic Jewish State of Israel.
