Jewel Foods - a new shopping experience for the southside and the future

Since 1899, Jewel Foods has remained committed to the communities it serves. Its latest store, located in the Marshfield Plaza Shopping Center at 117th & Marshfield, is LEED Certified. This means it is constructed with water saving fixtures and faucets, has energy efficient lighting, heating, and air-conditioning, used regional and recycled materials during the construction, and has a ventilation system to enhance air quality in the store. The store offers preferred parking for low-emission fuel efficient cars.

In addition, this store received a GreenChill Gold Certification from the Environmental Protection Agency. Not bad. This is Jewel-Osco's second "green" store. The other location is in Chicago's Fulton RIver District.

Jewel Foods (now owned by Minneapolis-based SuperValu) is the largest single food donor to the Greater Chicago Food Depository and a major supporter of the United Way. Jewel is also a founding member of the Chicago Minority Business Development Council. Since 1972 the Jewel concept has stressed good citizenship within the community, “watching the horizon” and sponsoring young people.

With all these money saving fixtures in place I 'm wondering when Jewel can move more than just six stores back to the neighbor"hood" and save us money too.   Just asking.
