The Philadelphia Eagles are going to completely revamp their offense with Chip Kelly as head coach. But to the Eagles faithful, anything would be better than Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg’s tricks and unbalanced attack. However, the New York Jets weren’t scared off by Mornhinweg’s approach, as they made him their new offensive coordinator on Jan. 18, according to the Associated Press.
Both Mornhinweg and Reid have now found new jobs in the AFC after all their years together with the Eagles. Whereas Reid is the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, Mornhinweg will lead the offense of the Jets – and both have a lot of intense work to do to turn things around.
The Jets became a soap opera with the drama around quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow. But while New York seems eager to get rid of Tebow, it will have a far harder time breaking up with Sanchez due to his expensive contract. Yet after the way he has collapsed in the last two seasons, it could be a price the Jets are willing to pay.
However, if the Jets want to give Sanchez one last chance, it will be up to Mornhinweg to help save his career in New York. If Mornhinweg’s Philadelphia career is any indication, he will give Sanchez a lot of responsibility. His offense frequently neglected the run and often let quarterbacks throw over 40 times a game, even against all logic, which may be a scary proposition for the Jets if Sanchez doesn’t get back on track.
Of course, there will be speculation on whether Mornhinweg will take Michael Vick with him to replace Sanchez. Yet the New York Daily News’s Manish Mehta tweeted on Jan. 18 that sources tell him it is “unlikely as of right now.” On the other hand, he also tweeted “never say never.”
Although the Eagles completely collapsed in 2012, the major figures in that rotten season are still finding work elsewhere. Reid is a head coach again and Mornhinweg gets to lead another troubled offense, while Vick and defensive coordinator Todd Bowles may find new teams before long.
The Jets should be worried about how Mornhinweg’s offensive strategy wore thin with the Eagles. But with their own offense in such a shambles and with big decisions ahead regarding Sanchez, they can’t afford to be picky.
