Two teams that have been disappointed with their recent results fought out a tight draw, as Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Victory fought out a 1-1 draw at Hunter Stadium on Friday night.

Newcastle started the better side with plenty of possession but they struggled to create any real chances with their efforts coming from Ruben Zadkovich from long range.

Victory worked on the counter but they had some solid goal scoring chances with Kosta Barbarouses breaking the offside trap and going close but being saved by Mark Birighitti.

Again it was a shot from distance that gave Newcastle a good chance but it was an impressive effort as Craig Goodwin's 25 meter free-kick went under the wall forcing a good save out of Nathan Coe before Pablo Contreras cleared the rebound.

With three minutes remaining in the half, another Goodwin free-kick put Newcastle in front as he sent a dangerous ball in the box which Mitch Nichols headed past his own keeper for an own goal, giving Newcastle a 1-0 lead at the break.

Early in the second half Newcastle probably should have had their second, when James Brown was able to find miles of space in the box but inexplicably shot well and truly over the bar.

Victory responded to that missed chance almost instantly as Kosta Barbarouses was able to get past his defender and space down the right and crossed for Andrew Nabbout who was able to poke home the rebound.

That lead to an open game, with both sides leaving plenty of space for their opponents but the finishing was poor throughout the second half, with neither side really deserving of the win.
