Jesus turns water into wine at cana

In the Gospel reading from John, Jesus, his disciples and his mother, Mary, are at a wedding in Cana. The wine runs out and Mary tells Jesus. He seems rather incredulous when he asks her, “Woman, why turn to me?” Certainly something as trivial as a lack of wine could not possible call for divine intervention. Mary does not plead with Jesus to help. As a matter of fact, she does not say another word to Jesus. Instead, she turns to the servants and tells them, “Do whatever he tells you.” Jesus turns the water into wine and his disciples are amazed at his first miracle in their presence. While the focus of the Gospel has always been on Jesus performing the miracle, as it should be, there is also something else to consider: the role of Mary. This is the only time Mary speaks in John’s Gospel, but her role is clearly defined. She is an intercessor on behalf of those in need. She is a spiritual director who says to live the Gospel message of Jesus. She is a model of faith because she believes that her son can perform a miracle. How well do you know Mary?
