There are people who go around thinking that Jesus never claimed to be God. He was just a guy from two thousand years ago who went around doing good deeds and healing people. While it is true Jesus never came out and said the words, “I am God so you better listen to me,” but he did claim his deity with dropping the words, “I AM” every once in a while. Two words which the Israelites knew was Jesus declaring that he was on equal terms with God, that He was God.
This is the backdrop for John chapter 10:22. It is the time of the Feast of Dedication which took place in Jerusalem in winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon. Some of the Jews came up to Him and asked, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.”
One can almost see Jesus roll His eyes before answering them. “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name bear witness about me, but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. I and the Father are one.”
Jesus gave the obvious answer to their question, “I and the Father are one,” but instead of listening to Him they tried to stone Him. The same thing happens today. When people ask why they should believe Jesus is the Son of God and the evidence is laid out before they balk and start throwing verbal stones. The truth is sometimes harmful to hear but it is still the truth and must be heard..
Instead of throwing stones at Jesus the people should have been throwing praises and kneeling at His feet.
