Some of the statements of Jesus Christ are well known and quotable and have even become folkloric in ours and many other cultures:
Love one another. (John13:34)
Treat other people like you would want to be treated. (Luke 6:31) (The Golden Rule)
Rejoice. (Luke 10:20)
Give to Caesar things that are Caesar’s. (Mark 12:17)
You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Mark 12:31)
Seek and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. (Luke 11:9)
All these sayings are good advice for living a moral life. But some of his statements may be some kind of cryptogram that is for us to decipher as the message may not be as clear as it is in his more simple statement. Many of his statements are shrouded in analogy, parable and metaphor.
Some may not really be cryptic, just unheard of for failure to be repeated either because of lack of understanding or because the message may be disagreeable. Some of his statements can be considered indictments against modern day hypocrisy.
Here is a list of 48 of the more obscure statements of the things commanded of us by Jesus, according to religious scholar, Daniel Putnam Green:
