When America is under the control of a pro-choice President, should Catholics comply in obedience? When American religious liberty is under assault, should Catholics comply with what seems like apparent destiny? When the world around us is imploding in promiscuity, and exploding in relativism, and violence, and hatred, should we pull out our Ukulele's and sing Kumbaya?
For Jesus reminds us: 'Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.'
That is why a little biblical-history lesson is necessary. Like the Israelites of the Old Testament, God has allowed the pagans to conquer America, imprison her, and dominate her, in hopes that she will wake up to God, destroying her idols and her reliance on anything anti-Christian. That is why God has allowed Barack Obama to become President. He is the consequence, and punishment, for our desire for change from our Judaeo-Christian roots. Surely, prior to Obama, we were always an imperfect nation. But never before have we blatantly rejected God, replacing Him with the blasphemous idols of death, entitlement, class and race politics, and overt sexual licentiousness. Never before have we legalized such Anti-Christianity.
But the story never ends there...
In the Old Testament there is always the lone prophet crying in the wilderness, pointing toward the horizon of God's Mercy...if only we repent. And just as heaven is solely for the perfected in Christ, heavenly bodies need perfection in the purging Love of God. We must, therefore, accept that Obama is our President. We must not, however, accept his blatant Anti-Christian message. Thus, our purgation lies in suffering through Obama while fighting to remain faithful to the Lord.
And we can only do this within Jesus' holy dissension.
For family lines and relationships are insufficient for our current loyalties. When mom or brother or cousin Catholic, votes and lives a cafeteria-Catholic life, we must prophecy their shortcomings compassionately--since we are sinners ourselves--but uncompromisingly, since the devil is in the business of damnation, and American damnation is a booming business! For if our family is not for Christ, we must be for Christ for our family! And this will certainly come with much rejection and pain. But prayer, and the Eucharist, and charity, and evangelization are all we have to offer the world. They have everything else--and nothing at all!
And that is why we must dissent, for our salvation, and theirs if they wish, in the Christ who came 'to bring fire to the earth.'
