Jesus is Lord: Lord, Son of David

 Lord, Son of David
What says Lord more that Lord, Son of David? To the people of this first century there were only a handful of personalities that influenced them. Abraham, Moses, and David probably topped the list. Of these, only David was king. So how would you get someone’s attention if you were among the least of the people of this time? Call for the Lord, Son of David as the two blind men did in Matthew 20:29-34. And when they were rebuked, they shouted even louder. Jesus answered and healed the men which is the focal point of the scripture in most cases, but in the context of this examination we see that he responded as addressed: Lord, Son of David.
Only two chapters later, we see Jesus confound the teachers of the law with the dichotomy of Lord and Son of David from the Psalms. In this 22nd chapter of Matthew, Jesus has blunted the arguments of both the Pharisees and the Sadducees in the areas of death and taxes. Actually the order presented is taxes and death, but the questions designed to stump Jesus backfired on those hoping to ambush him. After a third encounter with these teachers of the law, this time with a Pharisee believed to be an expert in the law with whom Jesus revealed a truth that even this expert could not contest—“all the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments;” Jesus asks a series of questions.
He asks “whose son is the Christ?” After a series of illuminating and humiliating experiences, I am inclined to believe that the Pharisees jumped for joy at getting to play on their home court. Of course the answer was David.
He said to them, "How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him 'Lord'? For he says,   "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet." '
If then David calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?"
No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.    Matthew 22:43-23:1 NIV
No one dared to asked him any more questions because the answer to the question that David asked could only be Jesus is Lord! This was too difficult for the teachers of the law to accept. They envisioned a Messiah mounted on a white horse with a blood covered sword who would drive out the Roman oppressors and put the teachers of the law in their rightful places at the top of the Messiah’s hierarchy. The fact that the wisest of this age were blind to the truth does not make it any less the truth. Jesus is Lord.

This survey explores and confirms that this is a very viable thread throughout the gospels, epistles, and eschatology of the New Testament. Decide for yourself if you agree with Dr. Rustenhaven and myself, that the message of the New Testament is JESUS IS LORD!
