Lord in All Aspects of the Term
With a general understanding of the term Lord, I begin this series of substantiating scriptures near the center of the New Testament in Paul’s letter to the church at Colosse. This follows Paul’s description of God rescuing us from the dominion of darkness by his son, Jesus.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Colossians 1:15-20 NIV
This single passage surely completes the dimension of supremacy and authority. How much more authority can there be than to be the author of creation. Paul reveals to us that God’s fullness resides in Jesus. All things were created by him and for him. Surely, the creator of a thing at least initially has the property rights, and Jesus has property rights to creation and to us. In this verse we also see the ruling authority bestowed in him over all things in heaven and on earth—including earthly rulers and earthly authorities. Early in the next chapter (2:3), Paul reveals that Jesus contains all the riches of wisdom and knowledge. At the beginning of the third chapter, Jesus is depicted as seated at the right hand of God. In Colossians, we substantiate that Jesus is Lord not just in one aspect, but in all.
This survey explores and confirms that this is a very viable thread throughout the gospels, epistles, and eschatology of the New Testament. Decide for yourself if you agree with Dr. Rustenhaven and myself, that the message of the New Testament is JESUS IS LORD!
