“‘Jesus is coming……look busy!’; that’s what was posted on the marquis in front of a local church here in Clinton for a few days last week and up until yesterday,” reported the Reverend J.A. Layman, evangelist with Sterling Ministries, before The Lay School faculty here in Clinton, Tennessee. “The picture at the left verifies this was so. The first time I saw this marquis, I could not help but think, ‘This is the kind of statement that workers in the workplace make when the boss is coming!’ And then almost immediately the Holy Spirit impressed upon my mind, ‘Look Busy? Look busy as if the boss is coming? Should we not be more concerned about BEING busy, since Jesus, as both Lord and Saviour, and second person in the Holy Trinity, is omniscient? And that would mean He knows whether we are and have been busy or not, right? Or is the message on the marquis supposed to convey the idea that, hey, we at this church really don’t believe that Jesus is part of the Godhead; we don’t really believe that He is omniscient? For surely if we did believe it we would want to convey to the lost and dying world around us that not only do we believe it, but we are actively and diligently at work in His service as we have been commanded in His Word, The Bible. Surely those of our neighbors around us at this church see how full our parking lot is every time we hold service, and that shows just how busy we are both as individuals and as a church! But of course there are those we are sure that have never passed by our church when services are being conducted to see how full our parking lot is. Maybe we should have stopped and thought about the message for our marquis; maybe we should have thought it through just a little bit more. Maybe we should have considered how other people, especially the unsaved, might take what the message on our marquis says!”
