Jesus Christ is mentioned in the Bible in both the Old and New Testament, however, in the Old Testament; Jesus Christ is alluded to through prophecies. Those looking for a description of Jesus Christ in the Bible may want to begin with the New Testament and then compare verses with the prophesies contained in the Old. The first verse showing Jesus Christ in the New Testament is in Matthew 1:1 which is the first verse in the entire New Testament. The New Testament is the story of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 1:1 begins with the genealogy of Jesus Christ and refers to Jesus as the son of David and the son of Abraham. There are many scholarly and theological reasons behind why Jesus Christ is referred to as both the son of David and the son of Abraham in this verse. The belief is that the “son of David” refers to Jesus Christ’s kingly rule through the prophesies that a ruler would come from David as well as prophesies regarding Abraham’s seed. Prophetic verses regarding Jesus Christ given to Abraham include Genesis 12:3, Genesis 22:18 and these are confirmed in the New Testament in verse such as Galatians 3:16.
Prophetic verses about Jesus Christ in the Bible that refers to Jesus as the seed of King David include 2 Samuel 7: 12-19 and Jeremiah 23:5. Matthew 1:1 kicks off Jesus Christ’s genealogy as it demonstrates to the Jews that the prophesies that foretold the coming Messiah are fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Matthew chapter 1 continues to demonstrate Jesus Christ’s family tree as it is traced from Abraham to Joseph, who was Jesus’ earthly father. There are many faiths that focus heavily on Jesus Christ’s mother, Mary, while neglecting the importance of the role that Joseph played. Matthew chapter 1 shows Jesus Christ’s genealogy from Abraham to Joseph validating that God specifically chose Joseph, as well as Mary, for Jesus Christ to have the legal, Abrahamic genealogy that qualifies him as the Messiah.
