Jesus came to return to reign

Handel's Messiah is a well known piece of music usually associated with Christmastime but actually can be played at Easter or any other time of the year. This is because Handel's Messiah is written in a three part structure which chronicles the birth, death, resurrection and the return of Jesus.

The first part of the piece tells of the birth of Jesus as predicted by the Old Testament prophets. Part 1 then flows into the announcement of the birth of Jesus is presented to the shepherds using the words of Luke.

The second part tells of Jesus' death, His resurrection and ascension into Heaven and the spreading of the Gospel throughout the world and the telling of God's glory summarized in the Hallelujahs.

The third part of tells of the redemption of mankind, followed by a prediction of the Day of Judgment and the general Resurrection ending in the final victory which is yet to come.

And He shall reign forever and ever
And He shall reign forever and ever
And He shall reign forever and ever
And He shall reign forever and ever

Revelation 11:15 is the source of of the final part of Handel's great piece of music. As the trumpet sounds and the judgments continue to be thrown on an unrepentant earth the voices of Heaven say, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”
Mankind now lives in a world where God has set aside the use of his mighty power and no longer verbally speaks His will to people like Moses or Abraham. Today God chooses to act so subtly through His church that the lost laugh at any thought of divine intervention and pass many obvious actions of God as coincidences or acts explainable by science.

One day God will again show His mighty power and Jesus will reign, “forever and ever,” in the “kingdom of the world.” Until then at Christmas and every other time of the year when things seem the darkest Christians everywhere can rise up and shout with angels, “God reigns,” yes God still reigns.
