Sometimes you want to squeeze in a light workout in between tough ones. Walking is great exercise but when you want to make it a little more interesting, check out Jessica Smith’s new workout DVD “Walk On With Jessica Smith: Strength & Balance.” (Wellness Systems, $14.95).
Smith is a certified personal trainer, instructor and author who teaches at Equinox and Canyon Ranch in Miami Beach. She also is host of Jessica Smith TV, where you can find online workouts.
There are two 30-minute workouts on the DVD, the latest in her “Walk On” series. The first is Stride & Strength, a 30-minute walking workout that includes strength training and high-intensity interval training. It’s the more intense of the two workouts. All you need is a set of dumbbells.
The second workout is Fusion Walk, and you don’t even need shoes for it. The barefoot workout is intentional – part of the purpose of it is to strengthen your foot muscles. The workout is a fusion of walking with dance, kickboxing and Pilates.
The DVD is filmed outdoors in Florida, with seabirds, palm trees and boats in the background. She works with two background exercisers (one is her mom), and the moves are very easy to follow. There are no fancy camera angles to confuse things and the background music is a notch above the usual workout DVD variety.
