Jessica Simpson's weight-loss secrets: Portion-controlled diet, daily workouts

Jessica Simpson lost all the baby weight after her second pregnancy in six months by following a low-carb Weight Watchers diet and walking four to five miles a day. She showed off her weight loss and toned legs in two new Weight Watchers PR photos (see below).

Jessica said the key to her weight loss was staying active while pregnant — something she did not do during her first pregnancy (with daughter Maxwell).

"With Maxwell, I vegged out and laid around," Simpson, 33, told USA Today. "I knew I didn't have to watch what I was eating for the first time in my life. I kind of let loose, and I gained a lot. [With Knute] I tried to get 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day."

Simpson reportedly eats five low-calorie mini-meals a day, featuring lean proteins, non-fat dairy, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

A typical daily menu looks like this:

Breakfast: Green smoothie consisting of grapes, pears, avocado, spinach, lime juice and yogurt.
Mid-morning snack: Turkey with apple slices.
Lunch: “Brown smoothie” made with expresso, Stevia, whey protein powder and chia seed powder.
Afternoon snack: Celery with a tablespoon of peanut butter.
Dinner: Grilled steak and spinach salad with extra-virgin olive oil dressing.

Jessica, who's a rep for Weight Watchers, wouldn't reveal exactly how much weight she has lost or her current weight, but fitness expert say she has shed about 50 pounds.

Simpson said being busy with two little kids accelerated her weight loss. "With both kids, I'm running up and down my stairs a million times," she said. "Kids can keep your metabolism going. Eric and I go on walks together. I try and walk about four miles a day. It makes me feel better."

Simpson said exercise helped her deal with hormone fluctuations and eased her anxiety. "Working out and being active overall makes me a happier person to be around," said Jessica. "I let out so much more anxiety if I go out and walk and talk to Eric, who is basically my therapist on our walks."

Jessica also does yoga and works out for 45 minutes, four days a week, with her trainer Harley Pasternak. "It's a lot of resistance training, lots of lunges and squats," she said. "There are bursts of cardio throughout the workout as well."

Simpson, who's preparing for her upcoming wedding to fiance Eric Johnson, said her goal isn't to be super-skinny, but just the best version of herself. "I want to be a great mom and a great example to my kids," she said.
