Jessica Lucas may just have the most important role on The CW's Cult. As a member of the show within the show's production staff, she has an insight and an access into what's going on in a way that Jeff (Matt Davis) desperately needs to learn if he's going to get to the bottom of what's going on and find his brother (alive). She is young and smart and knows the value of researching outside of what the production is willing to share with her, too. And as it will turn out, she may have an extra special, personal connection to the show, as well.
"There’s a deeper motivation as to why Skye is so invested in "Cult," and you do find a bigger clue as to what that is...The second episode reveals Skye’s main reason for working for "Cult" and why she feels such a kinship with Jeff," Lucas said when LA TV Insider Examiner sat down with her in Los Angeles.
The similarities between Jeff and Skye's mission to get to the bottom of what this show is, and who is Stephen Rae?, and whether or not the fans are taking things too far (which Lucas admitted she personally would have assumed was the case-- before reading the full season's scripts, of course) make them a tight duo, bonded together almost instantly.
"We are pretty much a team right from the get go. I think a lot of that relies on that we both...had somebody go missing in our lives," she said.
"[This] draws [Skye and Jeff] together. It draws them together and it explains her motivation. They are sort of headed toward the same goal, but they have very different reasons as to why they are going there."
But so many of the characters on Cult aren't what they appear to be. Though Lucas shared that the early part of the series is pretty much Jeff and Skye teamed up, against everyone else, to find the truth, we have to wonder if Skye truly is completely trustworthy. She's holding something back from him, so just how involved is she?
"You don’t really know anyone’s true intentions. I think ultimately, you really are supposed to root for Skye and Jeff. They are the 'good guys' in all of this, but that’s not to say that there aren’t going to be aspects of our characters that are surprising," she said.
"It's kind of a mirror into our society and where we’re at, and maybe asking these questions of are we becoming a cult society because you could kind of take that concept and really lay that on top of anything: music, movies or celebrities or whatever. We are becoming quite an obsessive culture because everything is so accessible now. So, if it makes people think and question that stuff, I think that’s a good thing."
Cult airs on The CW on Tuesday nights at 9 p.m.
