Jessica Lucas on her 'Alice in Wonderland'-like 'Cult' moment

As if Cult wasn’t twisty and convoluted enough, it is soon diving into a hallucinatory dream world of sorts in order to allow Skye (Jessica Lucas) to confront her past.

In “The Kiss,” Skye and Jeff (Matt Davis) dress up like the fans of the show within the show, “Cult”—with Jeff as Billy Grimm—and head to a party to get even more answers. There something is slipped in Skye’s drink—a special something that is just like a drug Billy uses on the show. She begins to freak out, and her troubles don’t stop there. In fact, she collapses the morning after the fan party in the following episode, “The Good Fight,” and slips into an unconscious state where she sees herself trapped at Billy’s compound, with faces from her past haunting her. She even runs into her dear old (possibly departed) dad (guest star Obba Babatunde).

“The first four or five episodes were really still on this drive to find Nate, and that’s sort of where Jeff and Skye are. You find out bits and pieces about Skye—little teases here and there—but this is the first episode that really, really fully addresses where she’s coming from,” Lucas said when LA TV Insider Examiner was on set with her in Vancouver* for the filming of the episode.

“She’s dealing with a lot of her demons. Her father and Billy and Kelly represent different fears of hers, and she gets to relate to them in a very interesting and emotional way.”

How so? Well, Skye's mind's versions of Billy, Kelly (Alona Tal), and her father actually encourage her to give up and stop searching for the truth.

“It’s really confusing. Things appear and not appear [on] why she’s doing what she’s doing and why she wants to quit. Every time we do something important, it’s kind of that duality of wanting to quit versus wanting to keep going, even though it’s hard. This is it for her, it’s her internal dialogue that she uses to express her own wacky subconscious dialogue with herself," Tal added.

But in the real world, Skye's reaction to the drug is so severe, the doctors urge Jeff to locate a sample of the drug so they can find a way to reverse its effects in order to save Skye’s life. Detective Sakelik (guest star Aisha Hinds) arrives at the hospital but refuses to help. Jeff suspects that the drug might be hidden at her place so he takes matters into his own hands.

Cult airs on The CW on Friday nights at 9 p.m.
