During the Dec. 23 episode of ProWMMA Now!, World Series of Fighting strawweight superstar Jessica Aguilar (16-4) said TUF 20 contestant Carla "Cookie Monster" Esparza (9-2) will need to "prove herself" before having the opportunity for a rematch.
Aguilar, 31, fought Esparza at Bellator 46 in 2011, and the bout was an exciting three-round war that ended with a split-decision on the judge's scorecards.
"Jag" took home the victory, and Esparza walked away with just the second loss of her MMA career.
Aguilar, who is now signed to a multi-fight contract with the World Series of Fighting, says a rematch with Esparza isn't on her radar, and that her focus is solely placed on her WSOF debut on Jan. 8.
"It's not even on my radar. It's not on my radar," Aguilar said of a potential rematch with the former Invicta FC strawweight champ. "Why should I need to rematch her? She needs to prove herself and continuing doing what I'm doing, which is winning and proving that I'm the best and then maybe she can have another rematch with me if she likes.
"But she needs to prove that and I don't think she'll be able to because I don't think she'll get past Tecia [Torres], so that's that. She called out Tecia and she's not even going to get past Tecia. You can't get to number one when number five beats you."
Esparza famously called out Torres at Invicta FC 7, and that fight was expected to happen at Invicta FC 8.
However, those plans were scrapped when Esparza and Torres both received the call from the UFC that they would be contestants on TUF 20.
There's still a chance that Esparza and Torres will fight each other in the TUF 20 tournament, but there's no guarantee that bout will happen.
Torres and Aguilar train together, so that may be at least one reason why "Jag" says Esparza wouldn't get past "The Tiny Tornado."
Perhaps someday Aguilar and Esparza will have the chance to settle their feud inside the cage.
Until then, fight fans will have to make due with Esparza's upcoming appearance on TUF 20, along with Aguilar's bout against Alida Gray on Jan. 8 at World Series of Fighting 8.
