Actor Jesse L. Martin who closely resembles Marvin Gaye will play the iconic Motown singer in director Julien Temple’s “Sexual Healing”. Deadline reported on Monday the former “Law & Order” star who had been attached to another film about the late legend, is replacing rocker-actor Lenny Kravitz who had originally been cast as Gaye in the biopic.
“Sexual Healing” is set to start filming in Europe later this month. It will focus on Gaye’s life in the early 80s as he tries to conquer his demons and reclaim his career. Temple had caused a bit of stir when he announced that Kravitz would play the tormented singer. Gaye’s son Marvin Gaye III reportedly objected to the casting. Martin who also sings last appeared on the big screen in Queen Latifah’s “Joyful Noise” in 2012. He played Detective Green on the long running NBC series “ Law & Order” .
Marvin Gaye who became a star at the famed Detroit music label was tragically killed by his father in 1984 at the age of 44. He left a musical legacy that includes the classics “What’s going on?”, “I Heard it through the Grapevine”, “Let’s get it on”, and “Sexual Healing”.
