In the latest Superman vs. Batman casting news, it has been announced that Jesse Eisenberg is set to star as supervillain Lex Luthor in the Man of Steel sequel.

Media outlets such as The Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly also report that Warner Bros. Studio announced that Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons has also joined the ever growing cast, playing Bruce Wayne’s ally and butler Alfred Pennyworth.

Rumors as to who will play Luthor began as soon as news of a Man of Steel sequel was green-lit. With actors such as Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston and Joaquin Phoenix being named, the studio picking Eisenberg is an interesting choice.

Best known for his portrayal as Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network (2010), Eisenberg has also starred in a slew of movies including Adventureland (2009), Zombieland (2009), Woody Allen’s To Rome with Love (2012) and Now You See Me (2013).

In a statement, director Zack Snyder said, “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman's rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What's great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He's a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

Irons’ recently starred in the YA movie adaptation of Beautiful Creatures (2013), and starred in Showtime’s critically acclaimed drama The Borgias.

Of Irons’ role as Alfred, Snyder said, “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne's most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”

Eisenberg and Irons join Ben Affleck, and Gal Gadot, playing Batman and Wonder Woman respectively.

Also set to return to the sequel are Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane.

The film opens everywhere May 6, 2016.
