We don’t agree on much these days. One thing everyone can always seem to agree on, though, is the universal appeal of pizza. So, it’s never a sad day when one gets to visit a new pizzeria. Even if it’s not your optimal slice, it’s still pretty good. Here’s the next one to try out: Jersey Joe’s.
Located on University Avenue, they occupy their own building, with a small dedicated parking lot for those who prefer to eat in. It’s not fancy, but it also isn’t trying to be. It’s a neighborhood pizzeria, run by actual New Jersey transplant Joe. His style is all Jersey—not Italian nearly so much as Italian-American. It’s delicious, filling, and reminds people of grandma and the old neighborhood. It should not, however, be mistaken for health food. With pizza offerings like Ziti pizza—which is exactly what it sounds like: baked ziti-topped pizza—health is not their top concern.
At lunchtime, you can usually find some suits in for a quick lunch, as Joe’s offers a number of inexpensive lunch specials—like slices & soda, or a substantial sandwich & soda for about five dollars. Several pizzas are pre-made and heated to order for those in a rush. Calzones, sandwiches and salads are generally made to order and will take a few minutes, but are worth it.
At dinner, pizzas and calzones are very reasonably priced, as are conventional pasta dishes. More specialty dinners are less commonly ordered, made to order, and a little more pricey. In the case of dinner, the food will be too fancy for the place, so take it to go and put it on nice plates at home, where you can better appreciate it.
