Jersey City up escalator lurches to a stop and inexplicitly reverses direction

Jan 7, 2012, Jersey City

During rush hour on Monday morning shortly after 9 a.m., the Exchange Place escalator in Jersey City, loaded with commuters, reversed direction and went backward.

The Exchange Place escalator is a very long elevator – about 75 ft. from the platform below to street level. The escalator was carrying commuters up from the platform when it suddenly lurched, stopped, and started going backward.

The video shows confused and alarmed commuters scrambling up the stairs against the flow.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reports at least five commuters injured. The injuries were mostly bumps, bruises, and scrapes. Those injured included a woman with back and ankle injuries and a woman who was brought out of the station in a wheelchair and neck brace. In all, three commuters were taken to hospitals.
