Christians often say that with God, all things are possible and for them, it seems to be true. After all, most Catholics believe crackers and wine become the flesh and blood of Christ; many Mormons believe in being protected by magic underwear; and the majority of Evangelicals think God votes Republican. It is from within the latter group however, that we draw this week's example of an impossible thing being thought possible: a 2012 presidential primary endorsement from a man who died in 2007.
It comes courtesy of someone known for his fiction; the co-author of the Left Behind novels, Tim LaHaye.
LaHaye, himself an evangelical minister, has written an open letter to a group of South Carolina pastors urging them to vote for Gingrich in that state's upcoming Republican primary:
Please prayerfully consider going to the polls on January 21 and help elect Newt Gingrich, a proven conservative who has the best chance of replacing the present occupant of the White House with a man with a proven record of appointing conservatives to office that can return this country to the constitutional principles that God has chosen to bless for over two hundred years.
And just in case LaHaye's endorsement isn't enough to sway them, he adds one from the late Jerry Falwell:
As my friend, the late Dr. Jerry Falwell told me personally, "Speaker Newt Gingrich is the most qualified man in America to run as president of the United States."
Now Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the US House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999 when he resigned after ethics sanctions and a disastrous (for the Republicans) mid-term election... and that gives a probable date for this putative testimonial by Falwell to LaHaye. One has to wonder how LaHaye knows that Falwell never changed his mind after that or, through looking down (or up) from whatever postmortem place LaHaye believes Falwell to be, that he hasn't found someone else among the 2012 candidates he likes better? Is it just the certainty that comes from faith or does Tim LaHaye own a ouija board?
For his part, Newt Gingrich is grateful for LaHaye's endorsement...
I am honored to have Tim's endorsement. His work as both a minister and author is truly unmatched. Tim will be a terrific partner for the Gingrich Faith Leaders Coalition as we work to combat the influence of radical secularism and activist judges.
...But he hasn't said "boo" about the endorsement from the late Jerry Falwell. Perhaps Tim LaHaye should send Gingrich his ouija board?
