CNN is reporting today that an escaped convict was shot and killed by the homeowner during a home invasion in Iowa. Police say Jerome Mauderly, 71, shot Rodney Eugene Long, 38, as he descended the stairs. Long, who had previously escaped a minimum correctional facility, held the elderly couple hostage in their own home for four hours.

Rodney Long is in the recreation room at the Clarinda Correctional Facility during the morning hours before he is discovered missing. According to police, the prisoner climbed a fence and disappeared. A search is launched around 7 a.m.
Sunday, August 18
Police officers receive a complaint of a suspicious man in the area. Long engages the officers in a high speed chase. A deputy is shot during the pursuit.
Armed with a gun, Rodney Long breaks into the residence of 2609 Highland Ave in Bedford around 10 p.m. Long takes elderly couple Jerome and Carolyn Mauderly hostage for about four hours.
The couple decides that they are going to fight back. While Long is distracted upstairs, Jerome Mauderly manages to retrieve his gun from the kitchen. As Long descends the stairs, Mauderly shoots him dead. Officers arrive later to find Rodney Eugene Long lying face down on the floor. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
