Lee Nguyen put the Revolution ahead 1-0 just 90 seconds in and New England dominated the first half. The goal was Nguyen’s team-best 10th of the season and fourth in the last five games and also his fifth game-winning goal of the season, tying him for the MLS lead. Kelyn Rowe scored a rocket for his second goal of the year, assisted by Nguyen, and Teal Bunbury tapped in the third goal in the second half, finishing a combination from Rowe and Charlie Davies. Rowe is now tied with Bunbury, Diego Fagundez and Daigo Kobayashi for the team lead in assists with four apiece.
New England (10-12-3, 33 pts.) is now tied with Toronto (9-9-6, 33 pts.) and Columbus Crew for third place in the Eastern Conference and eighth across 19-team MLS.
World Cup star Jermaine Jones debuted in the 65th minute, replacing Kobayashi. The U.S. National Team midfielder was just acquired on Sunday and began training with the club on Tuesday. Jones came to the Revolution via a "blind draw" and will earn over $4.5 million in an 18-month deal. Jones played it simple and strong in Toronto to preserve the three-goal lead while feeling out MLS for the first time.
Steve Neumann made his 16th substitute appearance of the season and is now tied with D.C. United’s Conor Doyle for the most substitute appearances in MLS this season.
Bobby Shuttleworth finished the game with three saves, earning his second straight clean sheet and helping the Revs record a shutout on the road for the first time this season.
Jones will make his home debut when he Revolution returns for the first game of a three-game homestand to face the defending MLS Cup champion Sporting Kansas City at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, September 3. The kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on Comcast SportsNet.
