Jerky Treats recall by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in response to thousands of pets made mysteriously ill. The FDA is enlisting the help of pet owners to help figure out what exactly is causing the illnesses. According to United Press International on October 23, pets have been sickened for years and a number of them were killed.
About 3,600 dogs and 10 cats in the U.S. have been sickened with jerky-related illnesses since 2007 and 580 pets have died.
Most of the Jerky Treats recall products were made in China. Unfortunately the manufacturers of pet food are not required to identify the country of origin for ingredients. Anyone witnessing the onset of an illness in a pet is asked to report his or her findings to the FDA.
A hotline to report illnesses due to the Jerky Treats recall has been set up. Witnesses should call the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator for their state. Symptoms involve gastrointestinal, kidney and urinary systems. Owners that see symptoms should keep the rest of the pet snacks in a container and submit them for further analysis.
The Jerky Treats recall is a long time coming. Too long for all of the poor pet owners who have lost a loved cat or dog. It is incredible that it has taken six years for the FDA to do anything. The agency should be ashamed.
