For most pet lovers, the report on Fox News about recalled pet treats being linked to pet illnesses and deaths won't surprise many. For some reason, imported items for pets that may cause illness continue to be available for sale.
According to the details, as many as 600 pets are dead and approximately 3000 pets were made ill because of jerky treats that were imported from China.
No one has claimed to know what was in the jerky treats imported from China that caused the death and illnesses of the pets in this report. However, in recent months reports of salmonella and antibiotic residue found in pet products has alerted pet owners to issues.
Bermadette Dunham, the director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine had the following to say in her statement:
“Our beloved four-legged companions deserve our best effort, and we are giving it.”
Some pet owners may feel that avoiding products from outside the United States will be a better choice. Pet owners may want to go as far as eliminating treats as a way to avoid something like this.
