Mortal Kombat has evolved a lot through nine video games (one upcoming), an animated series, a live-action television series, and two feature films that have been rather less than stellar. The first of course being superior to the second.
Yet the brand is trying to reinvent itself so to speak and kind of go back to its dark and edgy roots. A brand new video game due out in April hopes that it will draw fans back to the franchise and get them excited about it again. And a trailer for a web-series devoted to the different characters premiered last summer to jump start it all.
Check out the trailer for Mortal Kombat: Rebirth
The trailer was directed by Kevin Tancharoen (Fame) and it was picked up by Warner Bros. for a series of web shorts due to premier around the April 19 launch of the new game. Good news is that a few of the perfectly cast actors from the trailer are sticking around for more.
Jeri Ryan is going to return as Lt. Sonya Blade while Michael Jai White will continue as Major Jackson "Jax" Briggs. The only other actual names we have for the cast so far is Darren Shahlavi who will step into the role of Kano. Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica) has also been confirmed to step in as Stryker. (Thanks to Brendan Campbell for this last bit)
Mortal Kombat: Rebirth will run for nine episodes and no other actors are on board yet, but Scorpion and Sub-Zero are set to make appearances in the series. Considering the number of characters that directors could work with from the franchise; if this web-series does well enough than maybe that rumored third film will finally be made.
It has to be better than the second right?
