Jeremy Restaurant hosts canned food drive

Jeremy Restaurant & Bar in Keego Harbor, is teaming up with Cass Community Social Services (CCSS) to host a holiday canned food drive and help fill the cupboards and pantries of families across the tri-county area who might otherwise go without food this holiday season.

Now through at least Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, Jeremy Restaurant will become a drop-off point to collect canned goods to provide food for the homeless in Detroit.

“The need is very real. Hunger is a private matter and the face of hunger could be your grandparent, a friend or neighbor. You might not even know it,” said Jeremy Grandon, owner and executive chef of Jeremy Restaurant. “Reports estimate that in the tri-county area, more than 700,000 individuals are wondering where their next meal will come from right now. That’s scary.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service, in 2012 approximately 49 million Americans lived in households that struggled to keep food on the table.

CCSS is in need of nonperishable canned and pre-packaged food that contains meat products, such as canned salmon, canned tuna, soup, canned pasta with meat. Canned vegetables and fruit are also welcomed. Products past their expiration dates or items where the packaging appears physically damaged cannot be accepted.

CCSS is a Detroit-based agency that works across the City in areas of concentrated poverty providing programs for food, health, housing and jobs. The organization prepares 20,000 meals a week that are served to homebound seniors, homeless people, two hospitals for adults with mental illness and the Detroit Police Department.

“We wanted to do this to make donating to CCSS easier,” added Grandon. “If the collection is strong enough, we are looking at expanding the drive. The need doesn’t end with the holiday season. I’m just one chef, but I believe with the support of the community we can make a big difference.”
