Jeremy Abbott kicked off the Olympic team figure skating event for Team USA quite badly and after the first event came in seventh. As the Olympic hopeful was expected to perform on the ice much better, it was a moment that hurt the whole team. The sport debuted at the 2014 Olympics and according to ABC News on Thursday team USA is behind after the first day of the performances.

Jeremy Abbott obviously is upset about his performance and offered a heartfelt apology to the team. Sharing that he talked to his teammates, the people who he felt he let down, the star revealed his apology decision after his figure skating performance.

"When I got off the ice I apologized to them and every single one was like, 'It's fine. We love you'" said Jeremy Abbott about his apology. While most figure skating fans were surprised to hear the star was so open about the issue, everyone is still getting used to the debuting sport with all the athletes coming together in one unit to compete as a country.

After the first day of performances, the United States is tied for fifth place. Even if the next performances are flawless for the team, it appears the best the USA can do is come in with a bronze. Yet that won’t be easy as the competition on the ice is fierce. The Canadians, Chinese and Russians are gunning for the gold and are within reach leaving America hoping for a team medal.

Currently Russia is leading in the Olympic team figure skating event. Miracles are possible, but with a new sport, nobody quite knows what to expect for the next portion of the competition.
