The San Francisco 49ers didn't waste any time on Monday night to start getting commitments from undrafted rookie free agents to join the team. With roster limits expanded to 90 players this year, the 49ers needed to start filling their roster with players that they feel could make a splash during training camp.
The biggest name on the 49ers' early commitments was quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. The former Oregon and Ole Miss quarterback is a San Francisco native and was at the team's local pro day earlier this year. Head coach Jim Harbaugh, who coached against Masoli while at Stanford, will get a raw product from Masoli as the quarterback's on-field skills could use a little tweak. Masoli led Oregon to the Rose Bowl but had some off-field troubles that led to his transfer to Ole Miss. It will be interesting to see how he develops with the 49ers.
Another Bay Area name that will join the 49ers is Stanford center Chase Beeler. Having been part of Harbaugh's team, the familiarity was a near no-brainer for the prospect. Also, Beeler had participated in Camp Alex back in June to help the 49ers learn the offensive playbook. Adding his experience to the team could help out in a huge way for the 49ers.
Other notable Bay Area ties:
- OT Donovan Edwards (Cal) - Had experience at right tackle and with the thinning offensive line, adding depth to it makes a lot of sense.
- OT Derek Hall (Stanford) - Another player with experience at right tackle that could help beef up the line.
- OT Kenny Wiggins (Fresno State) - A First Team All-WAC player that could help give the 49ers lots of depth.
- DT Brian Bulcke (Stanford) - Adding depth with a player Harbaugh knows.
The 49ers also addressed some other positions with these undrafted rookies:
- WR Tyler Beiler (Bridgewater) - Fast wide receiver from Division III.
- WR Dontavia Bogan (South Florida) - Current 49ers LB coach Jim Leavitt coached Bogan at USF.
- DE Demarcus Dobbs (Georgia) - Shuffle in defensive line forces 49ers to add depth.
- WR Joe Hastings (Washburn) - Set school receiving records.
- WR Chris Hogan (Monmouth) - Fast receiver who also has experience at cornerback.
- DT Sealver Siliga (Utah) - Depth to defensive line from a rising football program.
- OLB Monte Simmons (Kent State) - Strong, physical presence on the field.
- OLB Kenny Rowe (Oregon) - Sack machine that Harbaugh has seen in the past.
- NT Ian Williams (Notre Dame) - A late-round hopeful, Williams bring a tremendous skillset to the nose tackle position.
The 49ers still have a lot more spots to fill on the roster, so expect this list to grow over the next couple days.
