What’s not to love about wearing a tiny golden toilet around your neck? Native Los Angeles jewelers Jenny and Jimbob are pros at turning ordinary and unusual objects into adorably unique charm necklaces. Their necklace collections feature outrageous and funky charms ranging from miniature electric outlets to vacuum cleaners to gas nozzles. Each necklace is housed in a brightly colored matchbox with a unique sassy saying on the cover.
I had the chance to chat with Jenny, who is also a full-time actress, about her and her husband’s fantastically playful jewelry line.
Chelsea: Tell me a little bit about how you guys got started making the jewelry.
Jenny: Jimbob and I had just gotten married and asked for money instead of gifts. We used the money to buy precious metals and stones so Jimmy could make a gorgeous jewelry collection he had been designing. He spent 4 months and all of our savings making these amazing pieces. And then. . . the economy tanked. It was heartbreaking. We realized that many people were in our position; worried, frustrated, and with fewer pennies than before. We decided to go in a different direction and create unique jewelry that is affordable and makes people laugh.
C: What is the inspiration behind the jewelry?
J: I was tired of seeing girls wearing the same charm necklaces: hearts, peace signs, wishbones, four leaf clovers, etc. Why can't a toilet be cute? Or a stapler? We choose to make unusual objects into jewelry. The goal is to give people a truly unique way to express themselves and deepen their relationships with others. When your girlfriend gives you a "hoe" necklace you can't help but laugh together.
C: What is your favorite piece you've made?
J: I would have to say my favorite piece is the Cheese Grater. The box says "Be Great." When I wear it everyone always asks me if I'm wearing a cheese grater. I love saying, "Yes! It reminds me to Be Great!" And then I end up having a fun and unusual conversation. People have told me that they buy our necklaces because it helps start conversations about their businesses or things that matter to them.
C: Tell me about the matchboxes the jewelry comes in.
J: The necklaces come in custom matchboxes with a slogan on the top. It acts as a gift and a card. People end up keeping the box to put their little treasures in. It's like two gifts in one.
C: I heard that you were recently featured by Target?
