Jennifer Lawrence stunned on the Jan. 27 Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet in a Christian Dior haute couture “dark blue in silk” dress from the Dior spring 2013 collection. During the awards show, Lawrence appeared to suffer a wardrobe malfunction when the bottom half of her dress separated from the top half as she prepared to accept her best actress award.
According to a Jan. 28 report in The Telegraph, there was speculation that she had “accidentally stepped on the back of her gown or caught it under a chair leg,” adding that “actresses Marion Cotillard and Nicole Kidman looked on, knowing how embarrassing such an accident could be.”
Anyone watching could see that the skirt split or at least appear to rip as she rose from her chair.
The unintentional wardrobe malfunction was actually not a malfunction at all, according to the paper. The “Silver Linings Playbook” star and SAG Award winner reportedly forgot that she was wearing a three-tiered couture dress, and what looked like a huge rip in the dress was simply “a sheer mesh lining, built in to allow the skirt to flow elegantly around the wearer.”
Now, that’s real haute couture.
Wadrobe malfunctions are nothing new at red carpet events. “Modern Family” actress Sofia Vergara spoke about this issue after her she suffered an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction at the Emmy’s. “It's very easy [for a dress to rip] because you get out of the car, you go up, you try to go to the restroom. When you're on the red carpet, a lot of people step on your dress and pull it,” Vergara told PEOPLE recently.
“After awhile, that's what causes the stitches to get loose because usually you have those long gowns. You can never really control it, but you just hope for the best.”
