Jennifer Hudson lost 80 lbs with Weight Watchers: Now she helps others

The most common New Year's resolution? Lose weight. But Jennifer Hudson has taken a different approach for her 2014 resolution. The Weight Watchers' celebrity ambassador has set a goal of helping others lose weight and improve their lives, reported the Baltimore Sun on Jan. 21.

Jennifer talked with a gathering of Weight Watchers participants in Baltimore to encourage them to achieve their own weight loss goals. The city has expanded a program that allows low-income residents of some neighborhoods to join Weight Watchers for a reduced fee. It's designed specifically to help those who are overweight and obese.

When Weight Watchers first talked with Jennifer about their program, she was hesitant. Then, as she followed the diet plan and learned to make the right choices, she lost 80 pounds and become a believer. Now Jennifer hopes to pay it forward by inspiring others to lose weight. She's even written about her journey in "I Got This: How I Changed My Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down" (click for details).

"One of my New Year's resolutions this year was...to help change lives," she said. "I'm starting that by being here. Hopefully, my testimony can help inspire someone else's journey and make a difference in someone else's life."

Jennifer has already inspired those in her own family. Between 75 and 100 members of her family have lost a total of 2,000 pounds through Weight Watchers.

But her efforts to promote Weight Watchers' Healthy Communities grant program, which offers subsidized meetings and free app access to needy residents in three cities (Baltimore, York, Penn. and Racine, Wisc.) mean the most to her, she told People magazine on Jan. 23.

“It hits so close to home,” she said of the cause. “I know exactly the challenges people face, and I’m just excited to help inspire their journey. I want to change lives this year. I get so many people approaching me saying, ‘I can’t afford it.’ Now, we can make this happen for people of all walks of life and afford them the same opportunities.”

U.S News & World Report recently released the fourth annual Best Diets rankings. They named Weight Watchers the best diet for weight loss, as well as the easiest diet to follow and the top diet among commercial plans. Adding to the ease of following the plan: A series of Weight Watchers cookbooks, including:
